ABOUT US
Grootfontein Private Estate is located 3 hours from Gauteng in the beautiful Limpopo Province, near the famous malariafree eco-tourism town of Thabazimbi, South Africa.
We are a 4th generation family farm and welcome all lovers of the great African outdoors. Piet & Pattie Grobler bought the farm Hanover in 1939 and lived off the land during the extended school holidays at the time! Jan Grobler Snr and Marita took over in the 1970's, added citrus and cattle farming and moved the base to the adjacent Grootfontein farm. Jan & Perri Grobler changed to eco-tourism early 2000's and is your hands-on hosts. Josh and Sam Grobler (high school) is getting involved in lodge and farm management and hope to continue sharing our slice of heaven with guest to come!
We offer rustic bush lodge-style accommodation, hiking, birding, camping, 4x4 trails, kayaking, mountain biking...and keep an eye on our themed weekends - photographers, birders, bush cuisine - and events, especially MTB Specials. Of course, if you just want to relax in tranquil Bushveld with no noice or light pollution - we do that too!
Here you will find tranquility and a pristine, untouched Bushveld landscape that is home to 200+ species of birds, 120+ species of trees and a wonderful range of animals such as Kudu, Zebra, Giraffe, Impala, Blue Wildebeast, Nyala, Bushbuck, Warthog, various small carnivores, reptiles and Leopard.
Since the farm does not have the Big 5, you are free to explore the 535ha on foot, using your own vehicle, or bring your own mountain bike.
We are a carbon-sensitive eco-establishment so you will enjoy hot showers powered by gas or paraffin, gas fridges, and solar powered lights.
The farm has 4 rustic bush lodges and 2 bush camps, all unique and private from each other, and is perfect for short or long stays. We can accommodate up to 40 guests (camping included!) and have hosted Bush-Weddings, family reunions, corporate team building, MTB-races, and even a Food & Wine Festival!
IN THE AREA: We are 1 hour's drive from the famous Sun City, Pilansberg, and Marakele National Parks where you can see the Big 5 from your car. Thabazimbi got a scenic golf course and the Marakele Animal Sanctuary is well worth a visit.
AMENITIES: Thabazimbi has got a wide selection of Supermarkets, Garages, Restaurants, and Medical Facilities.
Grootfontein Private Reserve is essentially a Blue Zone motivated by it’s small, dynamic community of Nature Lovers, who frequent its lodges. Grootfontein lovers enjoy and embrace Conservation, off-the-grid living concepts, have a deep appreciation for Water-Wise initiatives and just can’t get enough of the raw beauty that each season brings to its valleys.

We look forward to welcoming you.
Jan & Perri Grobler
